MCC Members in the News Walk with a Doc Programs Beginning to Spread Across Southern Michigan
MCC Board of Directors memberMary Jo Voelpel, DO, FACOI, FACNM, was a featured physician during this summer's "Just Walk! A Walk with a Doc" program sponsored by Oakland County Parks and
Recreation. The free, monthly 2.0- to 2.5-mile community walks give participants the opportunity to ask doctors questions while walking at their own pace on paved, packed dirt, and grass trails in a county park. Each walk begins with a 10- to 15-minute discussion on a wellness topic.
Dr. Voelpel, clinical associate professor at Michigan State University, led the July 28 walk ("How Does Exercise Affect your Heart and Blood Pressure?") and the Aug. 18 walk ("The Health Benefits of Walking"), both in Orion Oaks County Park. Pamela Hackert, MD, chief of medical services for the Oakland County Health Division, led the July 17 walk ("Walk Your Way to Well-Being") in Waterford Oaks County Park.
No pre-registration is necessary for the walks, and free water bottles are provided to participants. For more information, contact Laurie Stasiak at 248-424-7076 (e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org).
Farmington Hills Since Fall 2011, Botsford Hospital has been sponsoring Just Walk! A Walk with a Doc events in partnership with Heritage Park in Farmington Hills. Following a short health discussion led by a physician, Heritage Park walkers are led on a 30- to 60-minute walk on the park's trails by park Nature Center staff. A different health topic is highlighted at the beginning of each walk, and walkers are welcome to ask the physician questions and engage him/her in a dialog about health concerns during the walk.
Upcoming Walk with a Doc events at Heritage Park are scheduled for Sept. 20, Oct. 18, and Nov. 22; walkers will receive snacks at each event. To register, or for more information, call 248-473-1800.
The Walk with a Doc Program is also active in Ann Arbor, where the Cancer Support Community of Greater Ann Arbor offers monthly walks in Gallup Park. Summer 2012 physicians have included medical oncologist Andrew Eisenberg, MD, St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor, and gastroenterologist Danielle Kim Turgeon, MD, University of Michigan Health System. Anesthesiologist Rosalie Tocco-Bradley, PhD, MD, Michigan Pain Institute, will lead the group's Sept. 22 walk.
