These Special Projects are part of the MCC's Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan for Michigan, 2009-2015: Mapping a Course for Excellence in Michigan (available as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file).

The plan also includes Goals for 2009-2015 and Maintenance Projects.

As part of the process of reviewing and revising the MCC's comprehensive cancer control plan in 2008, the MCC Board of Directors reviewed cancer burden data, evidence-based reviews, and capacity assessment results, confirming new Goal areas and choosing five Special Projects for the Consortium to work on during 2009 - 2011. The Board believed that if MCC members committed to addressing these Special Projects, significant progress would be made in a shorter period of time.

Workgroup members then covened to develop SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound) objectives and identify evidence-based strategies associated with the five Special Projects. MCC members subsequently agreed to support and participate in the implementation of these strategies, with the expectation that the objectives will be met by 2011.

On Sept. 17, 2008, the MCC Board of Directors approved the following objectives as MCC Special Projects for 2009 - 2011:

  • Breast Cancer

Objective: By 2011, 90 percent of women will report being offered age-appropriate breast cancer risk information, education, and suitable services.

  • Cancer Genomics

Objective: By 2011, expand public knowledge about the impact of genetics on cancer risk and management (breast, ovarian, and colorectal cancers).

  • Cancer Survivorship

Objective: By 2011, increase cancer survivors’ awareness of, and access to, survivorship resources and services.

  • Cervical Cancer

Objective: By 2011, reduce rates of cervical in-situ cancer among women aged 20 to 39 years by 10 percent.

  • Tobacco Control / Lung Cancer

Objective: By 2011, increase the number of health care providers and allied health care professionals statewide who receive training and apply tobacco use assessment and treatment methods.
