Colorectal Cancer Awareness Network (CRAN)

What is CRAN?
CRAN logoOne of the first steps in addressing Michigan’s colorectal cancer burden is to build awareness of the importance of early detection through appropriate screening tests. In 2002, the Michigan’s Cancer Consortium established the Colorectal Cancer Awareness Network (CRAN) as a community-based strategy to help address Michigan’s colorectal cancer control strategic priority.

CRAN is a network of regional coalition of groups, agencies, organizations, and individuals who are interested in promoting awareness of colorectal cancer and advancing CRAN's mission. Since early 2004, the American Cancer Society, Great Lakes Division, an MCC member organization, provides oversight to the CRAN effort in Michigan. Throughout Michigan and Indiana, regional ACS offices are conducting CRAN activities in collaboration with their community partners.

Taking Action

CRAN's Mission:
Promoting awareness of colorectal cancer and the importance of screening among all Michigan men and women through public education.

CRAN is a sum of its parts. Each regional CRAN is unique to its community and the organizations involved and bring a cadre of health professionals, advocates, survivors, and business leaders to the table to address the burden of colorectal cancer in their local communities. CRAN is about networking and sharing ideas. It is about getting the message out to men and women about the importance of early detection of colorectal cancer through preventive screening in a way that addresses the distinct needs of a community.

Here are just some examples of what CRAN does to carry out its mission:

  • Distribute information regarding colorectal cancer control using local media.

  • Conduct outreach activities to emphasize the importance of routine cancer screening and early detection among those in their organization and community.

  • Utilize state level data supplied on the MCC Web site to initiate change at the local level.

  • Convene meetings with key stakeholders to examine ways to work together within their communities in order to maximize the impact of activities that promote colorectal cancer awareness and the importance of screening.
