About the Program
The MCC Prostate Health Awareness Program consists of a one-hour slide show presented by trained volunteers to men and women in a community setting, using terms and elements that are explained in easy-to-understand, non-technical language. The research-based program includes pre- and post-program evaluations that help to ensure statistical validation and ongoing program enhancement. The program seeks to:
educate men about prostate health and encourage each of them to talk with their healthcare professional about their relative risk, and
Additionally, the program can be utilized to inform men about clinical prevention trials that could help change the incidence and mortality of prostate cancer.
The MCC Prostate Health Awareness Program was developed for the Consortium by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute; funding was provided by the Michigan Department of Community Health and administered by the Michigan Public Health Institute in support of the MCC. An additional presentation specifically for Hispanic audiences was developed and focus-group tested for the Consortium by Wayne State University under the guidance of Karmanos; that program is now available in
both English and Spanish.
About the Tool Kit In March 2007, nearly 40 community health leaders and stakeholders participated in a training workshop to learn how to market, present and evaluate the program in their areas of the state. Workshop participants were encouraged to use the information to educate men and women in their communities about prostate health. The program has also been used to train community volunteers to present the program to additional audiences, thereby expanding the reach and impact of the program and its educational messages. This online tool kit contains electronic copies of all the materials distributed during the March 2007 training workshop.
