The 2004 MCC Annual Meeting featured discussions about a variety of comprehensive cancer control topics. “Improving Cancer Care: Focus on Quality, Equality, Cost, and Reimbursement Issues”

Mark Clanton, MD
Dr. Mark Clanton is deputy director of the newly created Office of Cancer Care Delivery Systems at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). He is working with NCI Director Andrew C. von Eschenbach, MD, to increase the impact that NCI has on the quality, cost and reimbursement of cancer care, as well as to provide leadership in the national effort to reduce cancer health disparities. As a 17-year volunteer and a long-standing Board member for the American Cancer Society (ACS), Dr. Clanton has provided important national, state and local strategic leadership that has helped the ACS pursue its goals to reduce cancer mortality by 50 percent by 2015.

Cathy J. Bradley, PhD
Cathy Bradley, a tenured associate professor in Michigan State University's Department of Medicine, currently conducts research funded by National Cancer Institute grants and teaches at the MSU Medical School. In 2004, Bradley was honored with the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation Excellence Award for Health Services, Policy and Clinical Care. She received the MCC Spirit of Collaboration Award in 2003 and the Outstanding Researcher Award from the Michigan State University Department of Medicine in 2001.

Jennifer Elston Lafata, PhD
Jennifer Elston Lafata is a research scientist and director of the Center for Health Services Research at Henry Ford Health System. Lafata also is an adjunct associate research scientist for health management and policy at the School of Public Health, University of Michigan. She received her PhD in health services organization and policy from the University of Michigan. A researcher with many funded grants, she is currently working on increasing the Effectiveness of Cancer Control Interventions, an NCI grant and Understanding Colorectal Cancer Screening Participation, which is funded by Henry Ford Hospital.

“Who's Missing from the Table? Reaching Out to New and Diverse Partners”

Gregory DeLaurier, PhD
Gregory DeLaurier is a political scientist affiliated with the Work Environment Department at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Center for Community-Based Research. At present, DeLaurier serves as labor liaison for the Organized Labor and Tobacco Control Network, a joint project of Dana-Farber and University of Massachusetts Lowell. He has written widely on issues concerning organized labor, occupational health and safety, and progressive politics and is co-author of the book The Cotton Dust Papers: Science, Politics, and Power in the Discovery of Byssinosis in the U.S.

Orlando Todd
As a clean indoor air specialist for the Michigan Department of Community Health, Orlando Todd enforces and interprets Michigan's Clean Indoor Air Act. In that position, he provides consultation and technical assistance to local governmental units and businesses in developing and implementing smoke-fee policies, regulations and ordinances. Todd also serves as the consultant for Michigan's Smoke-Free Environments Law Project and as the State of Michigan liaison for the Smoke-Free Regulation Task Force and the National Organized Labor and Tobacco Control Network.

Cassandra Beverly Woods
Cassandra Beverly Woods is the chief of staff for U.S. Senator Carl Levin and the founder and past Board chair for the Federal Child Care Center. As a breast cancer survivor and beneficiary of early detection and effective treatment, she serves on the Speakers Bureau for the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute and also provides support to survivor's groups and lobbies federal and state legislators to expand cancer research funding and resources for treatment for low- and no-income patients. In addition, she works with physician and patient organizations to encourage greater participation from the African-American community in clinical trial programs. Woods appeared at the MCC Annual Meeting as the president of the Detroit Chapter of Sisters' Network Inc., the only national survivors' group focused on the needs of African-American women.

“Community-Based Interventions to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities”

E. Yvonne Lewis
E. Yvonne Lewis is the executive director of FACED (Faith Access to Community Economic Development). She serves on several community boards and committees, including: Pride Coalition (past chair); Broom Team; Prevention Research Center of Michigan; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Community Committee (co-chair); Community-Based Organization Partners (past chair); Communities of Color Genetics Community Advisory Board; and Planning Committee for the 19th Annual Chronic Disease/ Prevention Conference. She also serves as a Board member of the MCC, the Greater Flint Health Coalition, the Genesee Health Plan, and the Michigan Public Health Training Center.

Roni Rucker Waters
Roni Rucker Waters is the community outreach director for The Hospice of Lansing. Waters has developed and implemented the community relations plan for The Hospice of Lansing and the Lansing State Journal, and also served as chair of the Lansing State Journal's Diversity and Customer Service Committee.

Velonda Thompson, PhD
Velonda Thompson is the past executive director of Mo' Better Health Inc., a non-profit organization that provides physical fitness and nutrition education activities for youth age 6-16. She is currently the president and fitness consultant for Be-Fit Inc., where she develops, implements and staffs corporate and community health and wellness programs. Thompson serves as an adjunct faculty member at Davenport University and Schoolcraft College and has spoken at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Cardiovascular Health Conference.

“When Funds Are Cut, What Can You Do? Alternative Resourcing Strategies”

Robert C. Burack, MD, MPH
Dr. Robert C. Burack is a professor and clinician-educator in the Department of Internal Medicine at Wayne State University. He also is the medical director of the Wayne County Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program and the Detroit affiliate for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, promoting screening mammography among women ages 40 to 49.

Maureen Sheppard, MPA, RN
Maureen Sheppard is the director of Healthwise University at Ingham Regional Medical Center, which provides community education, health care screening, and worksite wellness programs. In 2004, Sheppard developed a partnership with the American Cancer Society to provide medical support for the World Oncology Camp, facilitated a partnership with Michigan State University to develop and implement an Animal Assisted Therapy Program for the Medical Rehabilitation Department, and assisted the Michigan Fitness Foundation in developing Michigan on the Move to promote activity and healthy lifestyles statewide.

Senator Beverly Hammerstrom
Senator Beverly Hammerstrom is serving in her second term in the Michigan Senate, representing the 17th District. Senator Hammerstrom is the Senate Majority Floor Leader, the chair of the Health Policy Committee, and the vice chair of both the Families & Human Services Committee and the Government Operations Committee.

Richard Murdock, MPH
Richard Murdock is the executive director of the Michigan Association of Health Plans, representing 27 HMOs that serve 2.1 million residents in Michigan. Murdock has 29 years of experience in health policy and finance.

Mark Bertler, CAE
Mark Bertler is the executive director of the Michigan Association for Local Public Health and has more than 30 years of community organizing and association management experience. His last 18 years of work have been dedicated to increasing recognition of the role and status of Michigan's local public health departments in all areas of public health practice, with particular emphasis on environment, management information systems, health promotion, and health system improvement.

Awards Dinner Keynote Session

William J. Mayer, MD, MPH
Dr. William J. Mayer, a partner and professional speaker for The Stryker Center at Kalamazoo College, serves as the chair of the Resource Acquisition Subcommittee for C-Change, formerly the National Dialogue on Cancer. Dr. Mayer's healthcare leadership experience includes positions with the National Cancer Institute, Watson Wyatt, QualityMetric, the National Dialogue on Cancer, and the Family Health Center of Battle Creek. He also has served as executive vice president of new business development and vice president of medical affairs with the Kellogg Company.
