How the Recommendations Were Developed
The MCC has convened expert advisory committees to discuss
the management of breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening and
follow-up. Participants in these advisory committees were selected because
of their clinical expertise specific for each cancer site and include
primary care physicians, nurses, oncologists, surgeons, pathologists,
and other health care experts from across the state.
Prior to developing the MCC Consensus Guidelines for the Early Detection
of Cancer, the advisory committees reviewed existing national guidelines,
cancer data, and available literature. This information was then analyzed
and used to develop the MCC evidence-based guidelines for the early detection
of breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers. The advisory committees continue
to meet on a regular basis to review existing scientific evidence and
revise the guidelines as appropriate.
The MCC has promoted its Consensus Guidelines for the Early Detection
of Cancer through its member organizations and has used the guidelines
to:
Develop statewide professional education materials
and messages for primary care providers
Develop statewide public education materials and messages
Evaluate progress toward achievement of the MCC Initiative
priority for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers.
All MCC member organizations are urged to share the guidelines
within their organizations, as well as with affiliated organizations,
members, and colleagues, and other interested parties.

Distribute copies of the MCC Consensus Guidelines
at provider education offerings.

Print a full-page color ad in your journal, newsletter,
or other publication as a reminder of the importance of regularly scheduled
cancer screening.
Display cancer screening posters in your provider offices
to educate patients.
Insert screening reminders for upcoming cancer-related
observances in regular mailings to providers, patients and your community.
