Cervical Cancer Awareness Month -
Ideas for Activities

There are many outreach and educational activities that can be implemented during Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. Below are just some of the events and activities that your organization could coordinate to increase awareness about cervical cancer.

Please consider being a sponsor or co-sponsor of a special event or activity this year and in future years to help get the message to people within your organization or your community, or to specific target audiences.

  • Run a pre-recorded telephone message about the importance of cervical cancer screening, including Pap smear and speculum exam, that clients can listen to while on hold at your organization. (MCC member idea)

  • Cooperate with local transportation providers, such as bus and taxi services, to offer free transportation for women traveling to cervical cancer screening appointments. (MCC member idea)

  • Work with local health professional education programs, such as nursing schools, to identify students willing to visit physicians' offices to distribute information packets and brochures about BCCCP services. Try giving brochures in creative ways, such as in coffee mugs. (MCC member idea)

  • Print ads for cervical cancer screening and services on place mats and distribute them to local restaurants. (MCC member idea)

  • Have bilingual volunteers or staff members make home visits to women who are part of culturally diverse groups. During the home visits, provide appropriate bilingual materials about cervical cancer. These visits can be done as an outreach activity or after screening is completed to share results and make appropriate referrals if needed. (MCC member idea)

  • Participate in the Cervical Cancer Quilt Project, with squares made by, or in memory of, women who have battled cervical cancer and pre-cancerous lesions. For more information or to help develop the quilts or bring them to your community, contact ncccak@nccc-online.org.

  • Collaborate with your local parish nurse network to provide women with information about cervical cancer and the importance of early detection.
    • Provide articles and messages for church bulletins and newsletters. (MCC member idea)
    • Conduct seminars about cervical cancer for mature and young women at area churches. (MCC member idea)

  • Work with businesses in your community to provide information about cervical cancer. Consider cervical cancer outreach activities in places that women frequently go, such as:
    • gyms or pools,
    • colleges and universities,
    • grocery stores,
    • hair salons,
    • child care facilities,
    • post offices,
    • churches, synagogues and temples, and
    • community centers.

  • Health care facilities could host a breakfast or lunch meeting to provide updates on cervical cancer and early detection to health care providers within the facility and in the surrounding area.

  • If available, arrange for mobile cervical cancer screening at special sites throughout the community.

  • Cooperate with local television and radio stations to promote programming that highlights cervical cancer awareness issues.

  • Cooperate with local print media to feature cervical cancer-related articles, editorials and advertisements.

  • Encourage local businesses and offices to allow women to go for annual cervical cancer screening during regular work hours, on paid company time.

  • Invite qualified health professionals and cervical cancer survivors to speak at special events in your community, such as:
    • teas or luncheons,
    • hospital/health agency sponsored events for the public,
    • brown bag lunches or in-services for employees, and
    • meetings of community and volunteer groups.
