Minority Cancer Awareness Week -
Ideas for Activities |
There are many outreach and educational activities
that can be implemented to increase awareness about minority cancer
issues.
Please consider being a sponsor or a co-sponsor of a special event
or activity this year and in future years to help get the message
to people within your organization or your community, or to specific
target audiences. |
- Run a pre-recorded telephone message about the importance
of cancer screening that clients can listen to while on hold at your
organization. Record the message in languages appropriate for your clients.
(MCC member idea)
- Obtain culturally specific birthday cards appropriate
for your clients that can be used as a special invitation to schedule
necessary cancer screening tests. (MCC member idea)
- Place culturally appropriate ads on placemats to remind
people of the importance of cancer screening tests, and distribute the
placemats to local independent restaurants in your area. (MCC member
idea)
- Have bilingual volunteers or staff members make home
visits to men and women who are part of culturally diverse groups. During
the home visits, provide appropriate bilingual materials about relevant
cancers. These visits can be done as an outreach activity or after screening
is completed to share results and make appropriate referrals, if needed.
(MCC member idea)
- Reach out to agencies that work closely with minority
groups. Arrange for exchanges of staff visits and meetings with such
agencies and your hospital or health care facility to raise awareness
and understanding of specific minority groups in your community. Among
the issues to discuss:
- health beliefs and health care practices;
- language barriers; and
- health care needs.
- Collaborate with the media to publicize local cancer
activities, focusing on unique programs that address the needs of minority
groups.
- Promote understanding about minority cancer issues
at hospitals and health care facilities by:
- providing education and culturally appropriate
materials for patients and staff, and
- providing resources and contact persons for questions
and concerns regarding minority cancer needs.
- Offer and promote training in cultural competency
for health care staff in your hospital or health care facility.
- Assess and, if needed, address the availability of
language services for non-English speaking patients in your facility.
- Evaluate and, if needed, improve the accessibility
of your facilities and services for patients with disabilities.
