ADDRESSING THE INFORMATIONAL NEEDS OF MEN NEWLY DIAGNOSED WITH PROSTATE CANCER IN MICHIGAN: DEVELOPMENT OF A PROSTATE CANCER EDUCATIONAL INTERVENTION TO SUPPORT SHARED DECISION MAKING FOR PROSTATE CANCER TREATMENT OPTIONS
PROJECT SUMMARY
The goal of this project was to develop innovative patient-centered educational materials that support informed decision-making for men newly diagnosed with prostate cancer. The Michigan Cancer Consortium (MCC) Prostate Cancer Priority Objective states, "By 2006, prostate cancer patients will have their knowledge and understanding of prostate cancer, treatment options, side effects, and quality of life issues measured by patient surveys, with findings used to develop, disseminate, and evaluate new patient education materials."
This project directly addresses the Prostate Cancer Priority Objective in a multi-institutional collaborative effort and moves the Prostate Cancer Action Committee (PCAC) findings into policy and practice. It builds on three prior phases of development. Phase I assessed current knowledge and understanding among men newly diagnosed with prostate cancer. Phase II was an in depth review of existing prostate cancer treatment educational materials. Based on the survey and the review of what was lacking in available patient education materials, phase III was the development of a new patient education resource in booklet, audio, and web based formats to support informed decision making regarding treatment options for early prostate cancer by patients and their families. Currently, Phase IV consists of:
- Disseminating the patient educational materials to patients newly diagnosed with prostate cancer and health professionals throughout Michigan
- Translating the booklet and audio formats into Arabic
- Designing evaluation tools to determine the utility and usability of these products
- Implementing the evaluations in collaboration with MCC and other interested organizations to look for these outcomes: patient knowledge on the topics covered, adequate information for resolving decisional conflict, and satisfaction with the materials. Secondary evaluations will be of the dissemination process and Health Care Provider satisfaction with the materials.
